Location: Northern department in the Oriental area of the Andes, with heights of over 3,000 m.a.s.l. Its territory crossed by the Marañon river belongs to the Nor-oriental Marañon region, together with the departments of Lambayeque and Cajamarca.

Boundaries: To the N the Republic of Ecuador; to the E Loreto; to the S La Libertad and San Martin; and to the W Cajamarca and the Republic of Ecuador.
